Persistence of Vision Raytracer
Version 2.2
Port for
OS/2 & DOS
This version was compiled by Michael Plate, plate@hrz.uni-kassel.de, using the emx-gcc
0.8h (gcc 2.5.7).
************************************ IMPORTANT ***********************************
This programm is a custom version of POVRAY 2.2 for OS/2 & DOS. It applies to all
statements in the file POVLEGAL.DOC (which you should read !), espacially the part
"CONDITIONS FOR DISTRIBUTION OF CUSTOM VERSIONS" .
This programm comes without any warranty and guarantee; you use it at your own risk
and I am not responsible for any damage or dataloss on your system. Service is only
provided for this special version of POVRAY and may be not immedately.
***********************************************************************************
A. About this version
----------------------
The only changes I made to the source were changing the frame.h and the makefile.
At least, this is not a real 'port'; porting means working and debugging hard, and this
great programm just compiled out of the box. The files in the source directory are
configured for a UN*X machine.
FRAME.H was changed at line 40, so you can see that I am responsible for this version
of POVRAY.
MAKEFILE was changed only at the compile options for some more optimization, which makes
povray at least 20 kB bigger (and faster).
For running POVRAY with OS/2, you need emx.dll in your path or the same place where the
povray.exe resides.
For running POVRAY with DOS, you need emx.exe in your path or the same place where the
povray.exe resides; I don't know how much memory this will need, but I assume 4 MB for DOS.
For runnig POVRAY, you need at least the program (oh wonder), a file called POVDOC.ZIP
(which is included in this package). There are some examples in the demo directory, and
it contains the include files. For full use of POVRAY you also need the POVSCN.ZIP, which
contains a huge mass of nice examples (you also need much time to calculate).
POVSCN.ZIP will be found at the same place where you obtained this package.
B. Where to find POVRAY stuff
-----------------------------
Graphics Developer Forum on CompuServe
--------------------------------------
POV-Ray headquarters are on CompuServe GRAPHDEV forum
Raytracing sections. We meet there to share info and
graphics and discuss raytracing, fractals and other kinds of
computer art. GRAPHDEV is also the home of the Stone Soup
Group, developers of Fractint, a popular IBM-PC fractal
program. Everyone is welcome to join in on the action on CIS
GRAPHDEV. Hope to see you there! You can get information on
joining CompuServe by calling (800)848-8990. CompuServe
access is also available in Japan, Europe and many other
countries.
PC Graphics area on America On-Line
-----------------------------------
There's an area now on America On-Line dedicated to POV-Ray
support and information. You can find it in the PC Graphics
section of AOL. Jump keyword "PCGRAPHICS". This area
includes the Apple Macintosh executables also. It is best if
messages are left in the "Company Support" section. Currently,
Bill Pulver (BPulver) is our representative there.
Internet
--------
The POV-Ray files are also available over Internet by
anonymous FTP from alfred.ccs.carleton.ca (134.117.1.1).
You Can Call Me Ray BBS in Chicago
----------------------------------
There is a ray-trace specific BBS in the (708) Area Code
(Chicago suburbia, United States) for all you Traceaholics
out there. The phone number of this BBS is (708)
358-5611. Bill Minus is the sysop and Aaron Collins is
co-sysop of that board, and it's filled with interesting
stuff.
The Graphics Alternative (TGA) BBS in El Cerrito, CA.
---------------------------------------------
For those on the West coast, you may want to find the
POV-Ray files on The Graphics Alternative BBS. It's a great
graphics BBS run by Adam Shiffman. TGA is high quality, active and
progressive BBS system which offers both quality messaging and
files to its 1300+ users.

PCGNet

TGA BBS serves as the central hub for a large network of
graphics-oriented BBS systems around the world. Following is a
concise listing of active PCGNet nodes at the time of this
writing. The POV-Team can neither vouch for the currency of this
information, nor verify that any of these boards may carry
POV-Ray.

PLEASE READ THE POVLEGAL.DOC AND POVINFO.DOC IN THIS DIRECTORY. THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT
INFORMATION ABOUT THE AUTHORS OF POVRAY AND THE LICENSE TO USE POVRAY !
**************************************************************************************
Directories to look for:
demo (POVDOC.ZIP)
docs (POVDOC.ZIP)
include (POVDOC.ZIP)
source (POVRAY22.ZIP)
. (POVRAY22.ZIP)
scenes (POVSCN.ZIP)
Now, get a fast CPU and start ! For real enjoyment, you also should own a graphics cards
which can display 65 K or 16.7 Millonen colors, a programm to view TARGA (.tga) files. To
